What To Pack For A Long Sailing Trip

Packing for a long sailing trip can be quite challenging, as you have to be prepared for all kinds of weather while keeping it light. In this blog post, we'll share our experience and tips on how to pack for a 3-month sailboat trip. You can also download our packing list at the end of the post.

Weather is the key

First, check the temperatures for all the places you'll be visiting, in the month you'll be there. This will give you a framework to work within. As for us, we were expecting warm weather, so we packed mostly bikinis. However, we know the nights can be quite cold, and storms might come so we also packed an inner layer of wool. We've also packed a good sailing jacket and waterproof pants in case of storms or squalls.

Stay fit on the boat

Sailing for several months can be an excellent opportunity to focus on your health, so pack some training clothes for both the boat and when you're on land. Try to choose versatile clothes, like running shoes that also work as everyday walking shoes - we want to save space whenever we can.

Don't forget to have fun!

Staying on a boat for an extended period can be… I wouldn’t say boring, but it can be tedious at times, so we've packed a few activities, like a deck of cards, Yahtzee, tablet/PC full of movies, courses on the tablet of all sorts, ukulele and snorkeling gear. You might also want to pack a tablet with books to keep yourself entertained.

Sun protection is vital

This is one of the most important parts, so don't forget to pack sunscreen, sun hats, cover for your body for when you get sunburned, and hair protection. You'll get tanned for sure, but don't ruin your skin and get cancer in the process.

Last tips

Pack in a bag, not a suitcase, as it will be easier to store on the boat. Also, leave some space for stuff you'll buy on the trip. Finally, start packing early to check if you can fit what you want and assess what you need to bring.

In conclusion, packing for a 3-month sailboat trip can be challenging, but with proper planning and preparation, it could be a breeze. Remember to check the weather, pack for staying fit, bring some activities, and don't forget sun protection. Happy sailing!
